JACKSON COUNTY — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that it has received information from several people about a phone scam involving someone saying they are from the sheriff’s office informing them they had either missed a court date or failed to pay a court fine.

The sheriff’s office says a person saying they are “Sgt. Matt Wade” with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office tells recipients they need to pay $8,000 via Apple Pay to avoid being arrested. The caller also instructed them not to show up at the sheriff’s office or they would be arrested.

The sheriff’s office says this is a scam. The sheriff’s office will not call anyone to collect fines or fees ordered by the court. Anyone who receives these types of calls should not provide any personal or financial information to the caller as it is a scam.

The sheriff’s office reminds everyone not to give out their personal or financial information to anyone over the phone that you do not know or trust or when the source of the call can’t be verified.
