JEFFERSON COUNTY — Jefferson County Fire officials report a Saturday morning fire destroyed a business east of Mt. Vernon.

The Phoenix Tops company has been family-owned and operated since 2016. They made handcrafted crematory urns and wooden flag displays.

Firefighters received the call of the fire around 5:10 Saturday morning. Upon their arrival in the 400 block of Meadowbrook, firefighters found flames shooting through the garage door of the 50 by 150-foot building, with heavy smoke showing.

The roof of the building ultimately collapsed and an excavating company was called to remove the roof to aid in extinguishing the blaze.

Bluford, Kell, Mt. Vernon City, Centralia Fire Protection, Woodlawn, Ashley, Waltonville, and Wayne City provided mutual aid. Firefighters remained on the scene until 9:30 Saturday morning.
