SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — On the third day of trial and before prosecutors could rest their case against former Republican State Sen. Sam McCann, he has decided to plead guilty on all counts.

While McCann would like home confinement awaiting sentencing, prosecutors are opposing that.

McCann stands accused of illegally using campaign funds for personal expenses, including paying two mortgages, financing multiple vehicles and vacations, fraudulently cutting himself checks for work not performed, and double-dipping on reimbursement for miles driven.

The trial finally got underway Tuesday morning after he had delayed the process for months by firing attorneys to represent himself, then admitting himself into an out-of-state hospital and rehiring his attorney.
