Douglas D. Shafer, 58, of Bluford, Illinois, passed away at 6:33 pm October 24, 2025 at his residence in Bluford, Illinois. He was born September 12, 1967 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the Dean and Joan (Huff) Shafer. Douglas married Karen (Capps) on May 28, 2016 and she survives.

In addition to his mother and wife, Douglas is survived by his children, Miranda Brummel and husband, C.J. of Salem, Illinois and Caleb Shafer and wife, Breanna of Bluford, Illinois; stepchildren, Kolton Pool of Bluford, Illinois and Lawson Gray of Ava, Illinois; grandchildren, Chloe Brummel, Claire Brummel, Hazel Shafer, Parker Shafer and Aaiden Pool, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, Jake and Wilma Shafer and Ralph and Opal Huff, and many beloved family members including aunts, uncles and cousins.

Doug worked as a carpenter for many years, was a member of the Carpenter’s Union, worked several years as an Industrial Engineer, first at Champion Laboratories at Albion and later at Continental Tire in Mount Vernon.  Doug enjoyed tractor pulling,deer hunting, farming and raising cattle. He was a very charitable person, serving the community in many capacities including School Board, Township Board, Volunteer Fireman and even cleaning out neighbors driveways when it snowed. Doug was know as a “practical joker”, and always enjoyed a good laugh. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Doug’s wishes were to be cremated. A Visitation will be held Saturday, November 1, 2025 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm with Reverend Russell Smith officiating. Memorials may be made in Doug’s honor to Angels on Assignment.
