MT. VERNON – The Jefferson Fire Protection District will hold an Open House regarding building a new firehouse on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., at Station 1 on South 10th Street in Mt. Vernon.

Officials say a new firehouse will help meet the growing needs of the community as call volume has tripled since 2000 and their responsibilities have expanded through mutual-aid and intergovernmental agreements.

The current firehouse is 81 years old and no longer meets modern safety, operational, or space standards. It was originally built in 1945. The fire district has occupied it since the early 1960s.

Residents are invited to come, ask questions and see the challenges firsthand during the Open House.
