Mt. Vernon — Mt. Vernon Township High School will have new head basketball coaches next school year. The school posted on Facebook Tuesday afternoon that it would begin a search for both boys and girls head basketball coaches after the resignations of Tim Holloway and Jeff Lonnon.
Holloway led the Rams to a 118–52 record in six seasons, with three regional championships in 2022, 2024, and 2025, as well as a sectional final appearance in 2024. Holloway previously spent 17 seasons as head baseball coach, where he won 383 games along with 10 regional championships, a sectional championship, a super-sectional championship, and the program’s only state trophy — a fourth-place finish in 2023.
Holloway, a 1994 MVTHS graduate, was also a star athlete in both programs and currently sits sixth all-time in basketball scoring with 1,355 points. He played both sports collegiately at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Holloway has been inducted into the MVTHS Sports Hall of Fame multiple times.
Lonnon became just the third head coach in Lady Rams history in 2009 following the retirement of Sara Rennie. Lonnon’s 17 seasons produced a record of 257–219 with five regional championships and a sectional championship.
Lonnon also coached at Anna-Jonesboro, Edwards County, and Benton, and retires with 424 career wins. He also served as head football coach at Anna-Jonesboro and assisted the football staffs during his time at Edwards County and Mt. Vernon. Lonnon was also a graduate assistant football coach following his playing days at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Already in the MVTHS Sports Hall of Fame as an assistant coach, Lonnon will enter the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on May 2 at Illinois State University.
Following the social media posts, MVTHS will begin its search for new head coaches immediately.
