The mock earthquake drill that ran all of last week is over.  Illinois, including Washington County and several other Central U.S. states joined federal agencies, volunteer organizations and the private sector in a large-scale earthquake exercise for the week.  The purpose was to test state, regional and national response and recovery capabilities for a major earthquake in the New Madrid and Wabash Valley seismic zones.  County Emergency Management Agency Director Rick Greten said he received a text last Monday morning that there was a mock earthquake.  Because Washington County is not that close to the fault lines in the area, the county provides more support than anything, but Greten said he was not asked for any supplies or equipment from the county.  He received texts each day, getting situation reports of any areas hit, as well as giving situation reports of Washington County’s status.  He said we would have had minimal if any damage and by Friday, he reported that everything was normal.  He feels this exercise was more for state officials than for lower officials.  More information about the earthquake risk affecting Illinois and preparedness tips are available on the Ready Illinois website at www.Ready.Illinois.gov.
