The West Washington County Community Unit School District #10 Board of Education met last Thursday night. Superintendent Scott Fuhrhop says they had a public hearing on the Amended Budget and it was later approved in the regular meeting. They approved two bids for a total of $12,000 from Addieville Lumber and Top Ag Coop in Okawville on the construction of a concession stand by the baseball field. It should be completed this summer. The cost of lunch has gone up 10 cents for the upcoming school year and an extra milk will cost 50 cents. Fuhrhop explains that they did so to get reimbursed by the state and federal lunch program, because if the price isn’t within a certain price, the school doesn’t get reimbursed. The Board also approved sending a letter of support for the Washington County Enterprise Zone extension. They approved supporting it previously, but now approved of the letter typed up in support. Agriculture instructor, Josh Berg presented the annual agriculture report to the Board. He talked about how well it is going and how it is helping students when they move onto college. This includes the FFA program. There was some discussion about what to do with 8th grade graduation. Since it is all within the same school, they thought there might be something different they could do for the students. They tabled this topic. Fuhrhop says they received a greenhouse grant in the amount of $10,000 and began discussion of how best to use the funds and where they could build a greenhouse. They already had $10,000 set aside for this project. There are still some issues to be corrected from the construction of the school, such as flooring throughout the building that is coming up, as well as 3 compressors that needed to be replaced already. Fuhrhop says this is all still covered from the construction and they are trying to get it all fixed. He also reported that students had a hat day to raise money for the Kaskaskia College Nashville Extension building towards the end of the semester and they raised over $200. The Board also approved of maternity leave for 4th Grade teacher Kristen Storey for October into December.
