Officials in Saint Clair County want to demolish a house near Belleville that’s become a neighborhood nuisance, as soon as they can capture dozens of feral cats living there. Building and Zoning Director Anne Markezich tells the Belleville News-Democrat that the elderly homeowner isn’t living in the house anymore. Perhaps as many as 28 cats have been left behind. Markezich says the county’s animal control department has been trapping the cats. She says authorities may seek a court order to tear down the house. Neighbors complain about the smell and swarms of flies. They’re worried about potential health hazards.
