The Illinois State Police out of DuQuoin report a vehicle versus pedestrian incident on Friday evening on Interstate 57 at mile marker 71 in the southbound lane. Preliminary investigative details indicate 47-year old George G. Scanlon Junior had stopped his vehicle across both lanes of I-57 southbound and was out of the vehicle. Witnesses stated Scanlon was acting erratically and running around his vehicle. When car driven by an unnamed 31-year old male from Mount Vernon, attempted to go around Scanlon’s vehicle, Scanlon approached the car yelling and aggressively gesturing. As the car passed Scanlon, he was struck. Due to the location of Scanlon’s injuries, he was flown from the scene via medical helicopter as a precaution with minor injuries. The southbound lanes of I-57 were closed for approximately 30 minutes to land the medical helicopter. The incident is pending investigation, but no charges on the driver of the car were issued.
