There was an accident late Thursday night involving a school bus on Interstate 57 northbound at mile post 89, south of Mount Vernon. According to the Illinois State Police out of District 13, preliminary investigative details indicate the left north bound lane of I-57 at mile post 89 was closed for construction. A marked police vehicle was on scene providing traffic control for the construction. Traffic, including a car driven by an unnamed 50-year old Mount Vernon man, had come to a stop in the right lane. The school bus, driven by 54-year old Kenneth G. Summers of Belleville was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of the car. The bus came to rest in the median. The car was pushed into the right ditch, where it came to rest after striking a tree. Both northbound lanes of I-57 at mile post 89 were closed for approximately two hours. The southbound lanes were closed for approximately 15 minutes to facilitate removal of the bus from the median. None of the 23 total, mostly high school age, bus occupants received any injuries, but the driver of the car, as well as 40-year old female and 14-year old female passengers of Mount Vernon were injured and taken to a local hospital. Summers was charged with failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
