In a maneuver described by State Representative Charlie Meier of Okawville as “devious”, the Department of Human Services released an audit last Friday detailing the current status of residents that had already been transferred from the Warren G. Murray Developmental Center to other locations.  “It’s devious to release this information when everyone is gearing up for the Christmas season and when they know very few people are paying attention.  It’s common for the Governor to dump out a load of bad information on Fridays because those are typically slow news days.  I worry what is in this report that they felt the need to wait until the Friday before Christmas to sneak it out of the door,” Representative Meier said.  The audit was performed by Equip for Equality at the request of DHS and is a known supporter of the closure of Murray Center.  Meier said that’s like having the wolf guard the hen house, adding “It’s obvious this report is biased.  When they use the phrase ‘these homes have been subject to harassment by members of the community’ about a few CILA’s in Centralia, Equip for Equality and DHS are directly attacking the Murray Parents Association and Friends For Murray.”  “Additionally, DHS described the fight between two former Murray residents where one had to go to the hospital because the CILA was understaffed as a ‘minor physical altercation’.  I don’t consider one resident sending another to the hospital a minor incident.”  Meier added, “Given their position on Murray Center and their desire to see it closed, I believe this report won’t be worth the paper it was printed on.”
