The Hoyleton Grade School Board of Education met Thursday night and Superintendent Elaine Hemker says they went over the tax levy and with the rate of increase asked of 4.99 percent, there was no truth in taxation hearing needed. She says they believe this rate will bring in an additional $23,000 in funding. Keeping with funding, she says Hoyleton has been receiving their payments as expected and the local tax dollars that have been coming in. The Board also approved moving $5,560 back into the Education Fund from the Tort Fund, a move made earlier in the year to pay some bills. They approved the authorization for seeking bids for mowing services and that process will begin next month. The Board accepted with regret, the resignation of 7th and 8th Grade homeroom teacher Kathleen Roper at the end of May. She has been with the school since 2000 and established their popular astronomy program, of which she will remain as coordinator for that program. There will be a special meeting, open to the public on January 6th at 6:30 PM with Dr. Nick Osborne, to discuss the declining enrollment and what can be done to keep the school viable, including the sharing of resources. Hemker explains further that they have met with Irvington Grade School and have co-opted some programs, with band and astronomy being held at Hoyleton and Scholar Bowl being held at Irvington. They have questions on what the future holds and want to have a third party come in with ideas. The first day of school for the New Year is Monday, January 6th.
