The Oakdale Grade School Board of Education met Monday night and Superintendent Charles Peterson says the Board approved the Tentative Budget for 2014-2015 year and it is approximately $30,000 in the red. He says the plan is to anticipate high on expenditures and low on revenue, but anything can happen through the year to change the outlook, thus the likely Amended Budget in June. He reported that there are 76 students enrolled at this time, which is down 3 from last year’s enrollment. The Board approved the annual Certified Salary Compensation Report, which is a report on the certified staff at the school and what they receive. It was submitted to the Illinois State Board of Education and put on the school website. Peterson says the Book Fair will be the week of September 29th and will culminate with Grandparents’ Day on Friday. It starts with a breakfast at 8:30 in the gym and the school’s band – chorus teacher, Miss Moran, will have students sing some songs and maybe play a little bit for the grandparents, while they eat. After that the grandparents will be allowed to go into their grandkid’s classrooms to do some activities. There will also be a stand set up, where the grandparents can get a picture with their grandchild. Peterson said they brought back the same coaches for Pee-Wee basketball and school basketball. Brett Kolweier is the 7th and 8th grade teacher and he will coach the Pee-Wee team, while Daniel Carson will coach the school team. Tabitha Goforth will be the cheerleader coach. Carson will receive a stipend to coach, while the other two are volunteers. The school had to find a new bus service, as the previous one from Coulterville decided to cut back and did not renew with Oakdale. The school agreed with a contract with Sherman Bus Service and Peterson says it has been good so far, but they kept the same drivers, so they already knew the routes, which made the transition easier. He also said the school received a maintenance grant last year to purchase a new boiler, but it’s a 50 / 50 grant, so they have to match it. Therefore, the Oakdale Community Education Association, the parent group, is having a spaghetti dinner on Monday, September 29th in the school gym from 5:30 to 8 PM for $5 per plate. The money will go towards the school’s portion of the boiler, but resident Jim Musselman will match up to $10,000 if the community can raise funds. So everyone is encouraged to attend.
