A 72-year old Arizona man, who was caught while preparing to rob a Mount Vernon bank earlier this year, pleaded guilty in Jefferson County court and was sentenced to seven years in prison. Clark W. Kirkman, of Mesa, Arizona, pleaded guilty to a Class 2 felony charge of robbery, as well as Class 2 felony unlawful possession of stolen license plates. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison for both charges, to be served concurrently. Kirkman was arrested after police were notified by a JC Penny employee that Kirkman had removed the Texas license plates from the car he was driving and replaced them with Illinois licenses plates that he had just stolen from a car parked at the Times Square Mall in Mount Vernon. Detectives from the Mount Vernon Police Department spotted Kirkman’s car backed into a parking space at Fifth Third Bank. They then secured the bank and watched as Kirkman put on a ball cap and sunglasses. He was in the middle of writing a holdup note.
