The Nashville City Council met last night and held a hearing on the Library part of the Tax Levy, as it was the only section that was over 5 percent of an increase over last year.  The entire Tax Levy for 2014, payable in 2015, was approved later in the meeting.  Of the $6,242,500 appropriated, $358,918 is the levied amount for Parts A & B of the General Fund.  Last year, the amount levied was $350,844 for Parts A & B of the General Fund.  A member of the Nashville Police Department is retiring.  Diego the K-9 unit German Shepherd is retiring and the department will be getting a puppy named Ava that will go through training and will be ready to join the force in approximately 6 months.  The Council approved of keeping the K-9 Program and of getting Ava at no cost to the city.  The City of Nashville Street Department will be closed December 25th and December 26th, 2014 as well as January 1st and January 2nd, 2015.  Therefore, the following trash pickup schedule will haveTuesdays’ pickups will be done on Mondays, Wednesdays’ pickups will be done on Tuesdays, while Thursdays’ pickups will be done on Wednesdays.  Trash must be set out before 7 AM as usual.  The compost site will be closing at the end of the day on December 31st.  It will be opening up in early April 2015.  Christmas tree pickup will be on January 5th and 12th, which are Mondays.  January 12th will also be the last day for curbside leaf bag pickup.  The Council approved of the purchase of 44,000 pounds of powder activated carbon for the water plant in the amount of $34,100.  Utilities Department Supervisor Blaine Middleton says this is used throughout the year to control taste and odor, as well as remove any organics.  The Council also approved of the purchase of a new chlorine analyzer for $3,323, as one has broken and is so old, parts are no longer made or available.  There is a need for more lights at the new Street Department Shed in the wash bay.  There were only 6 designed, but once they have been put in, there is not enough light, so the Council approved the purchase of 10 more lights for the wash bay in the amount of $3,269.  The building is nearly complete, as the lighting needs to be installed and final touches on the overhead doors will be done next week.  Councilman Keith Reckmann told the Council about an increase in the premiums of some insurance coverage plans through Baldwin House, which are liability insurance, employee practice liability, commercial auto, inland marine and workman’s compensation.  Increases were due to increased payrolls and the purchase of some new vehicles.  They will be receiving a workman compensation grant in the amount of $8,150 for safety meetings that Street Department Supervisor Richard Schuette conducts to keep claims down.  This is an increase of $400 from last year.  These policy renewals were approved.  Finally, the Council approved of canceling the January 1, 2015 meeting, so the first meeting of the year will be on Thursday, January 15th.
