The Oakdale Grade School Board of Education met Monday night and Superintendent Charles Peterson says they have an enrollment to begin the year of 78 students. The goal of raising funds for the purchase a new boiler has been reached, thanks to one generous donation and a community banding together to match it. Peterson says it will cost approximately $40,000 to $43,000 and they will use $20,000 from a matching maintenance grant and the other $20,000 came from a $10,000 donation from Jimmy Musselman, but only if the community could raise the other $10,000. And, Peterson says the community has also raised their share. WRF Engineers LLC will assist the school with seeking bids and they hope to approve of one at the March meeting. The boiler won’t be installed until the students are gone for the summer though. Peterson said he already has Musselman’s check and it has been an incredible effort, saying he has never seen anything like it, as the people have come together, and either they’ve gone to the school or their relatives have gone there and this is a real good school and they want to see it stay open, so they help out however they can and it is just super. The parent – community group has held some fundraisers and they aren’t done. The Board also approved of Wendy Bergman to be the volleyball coach this year. The school waiver was also approved and has come back from the state. This goes into effect next school year and lasts 4 years. It allows any employee’s child to attend Oakdale, even if they are from out of the school district with no tuition cost. The Board also agreed to have Clearwave be their internet provider, as they will be switching over from a T-1 line to fiber optics in the future. Peterson says this will make a difference on contectivity, especially when students will be taking the PARCC test, which is now online. The switch will also be cheaper after the school receives the E-Rate, which is a federally funded grant. Tonight is 8th grader night for the basketball team and cheerleaders, as it is the 2nd last home basketball game of the season.
