The Nashville Public Library is marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania with a presentation by historian Barbara Kay, says Library Director Linda Summers. If you have ever read any of the history of that, it is fascinating. In fact, it was an event that preceded the United States involvement in World War I. This was as the British ocean liner, the RMS Lusitania, was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915. Nearly all of the 139 U.S. passengers were killed, including some from Illinois, which shifted public opinion of Germany and influenced the United States to get involved in 1917. Barbara Kay has been doing history programs in the area for over 20 years and is a favorite in Nashville, as she portrays characters as she tells the stories. The event is free to the public, but they would like to know how many people are coming, so call 327-3827 to let them know you are coming by Monday afternoon. There will also be refreshments afterwards.
