Stephen R. Wigginton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced that 51-year old George E. Habermehl, Junior of Fairview Heights, was sentenced in federal district court in East Saint Louis, on Thursday for the crime of Bank Robbery, to nearly 10.5 years in federal prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release, a $100 special assessment and restitution of $3400. On August 9, 2013, Habermehl approached a teller at Regions Bank in Granite City, giving her a note that read: “I want 35 $100 bills in a bank envelope. Don’t hit the alarm or give me bait money or I will shoot.” In response, the teller gave Habermehl $3,400. On August 20, 2013, Habermehl was arrested in a bar in Saint Louis County, Missouri, after robbing the Pulaski Bank in Richmond Heights, Missouri, of $2,897. Habermehl admitted to robbing both banks. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Saint Louis County for the Pulaski Bank robbery on June 23, 2014. The judge in the federal case imposed the 10.5 year sentence to run nearly 5.5 years concurrent with the Saint Louis County sentence, and 5 years consecutive to the Saint Louis County sentence.
