The Nashville Grade School Board of Education met last night for the installation of the new Board. Incumbents David Engele and Shawn Knepp, were joined by new members Ric Jones and Janine Pieszchalski. The officers were then elected. Engele is the President again, while Kevin Klingenberg is the Vice President and Knepp is the Secretary. Superintendent Mike Brink updated the Board on the Hoyleton annexation, saying the immediate things on the list are done or are being done right now, except for the busing issue. He has received confirmation of 18 to 19 students coming from the Hoyleton Grade School and so these stops, plus a few in that school district that their Board asked for, are being put together and routes will be formed. He reported that there were between 15 and 20 families that came to the Family night last week. The student visit will be on May 15th with the elementary students in the morning and the middle school students in the afternoon. There will be a meet and greet with the faculties and staff on May 27th in the afternoon. At that time, they will also recognize the 2 NGS teachers that are retiring, music instructor Steve Northup and Special Learning teacher Lisa Boester. Brink also reported that there is some interest in the building, which could be sold off after the annexation begins. The Board went over several changes to the next school year’s Student Handbook. It explains the new block schedule for the 5th through 8th graders, an update on the bullying policy and lessening the days allowed for a student to be absent without a doctor’s note from 10 to 5 days. Also, the doctor’s note needs to be to the school by the second day the student is back at school. If a child is suspended, they will have a chance to get some credit for doing homework. If they turn it in the first day back, they can receive up to 67 percent, but this is only for the first time the child is suspended. After that every assignment will be a zero. There is also a change in homework turned in late. It used to be a letter grade off for every day it was late, but now it is 10 percent off for the 1st day, 50 percent off the 2nd day and a zero after that. These changes were approved by the Board. Athletic Director Jason Finke explained to the Board about the changes in the Athletic Handbook. He wants to stay competitive and keep the good sports officials working the Nashville games, so he is increasing their pay $5 across the board. This will be approximately $650 more, but some schools are paying even more than that. He also wants to keep the coaches, as Nashville Grade School has some great sports programs. To do this, he is increasing each year’s raise from $25 to $50. Also, after 3 years, the coach would get an extra $100. This would be per coach per year per sport. The Board approved of the Athletic Handbook changes as well. The only coaching change for next year is that Lexi Wilder will not be returning as the Dance Team assistant coach. Kayla Stanowski had done this and would like to come back as the assistant coach. The Board approved of the coaching assignments for next school year. Board member Keith Heimann will again be the Board’s representative to the Kaskaskia Special Education District. The grant money to be used for the new lighting in the gym has not come through, so nothing has been done yet. Brink said the pre-school room floor will need to be dealt with in the next couple of years, as the carpet will need to be replaced and there is asbestos tile underneath, so it too will need to be taken up. The school got an “A” on their Life Safety Code rating after the Illinois School Board of Education inspection. Brink also discussed the school budget. The school year is nearly over and they have spent 83.33 percent of their budget, which is right on target. Unfortunately, they will not be getting everything the state owes the school, which is $307,429. Brink says they already knew about the $110,000, but due to recent legislation, they will not be getting an additional $18,439. Of the remaining $179,000, he believes they will receive this after the next school year starts in July, but they should get it at some time. The payment at the end of March has not been received yet. End of the year PARCC testing begins on Monday, while Jazz night at Nashville High School is Tuesday night. Grandparent’s Day is a week from today, as is the 7th and 8th grade dance. Graduation is still on May 22nd at 7 PM in the Primary School gym. The last day of school for students is the half day on May 27th with a teacher in-service day on May 28th.
