The first annual Veterans Tribute celebration was held at Kaskaskia College on Sunday, just one day after the 71st anniversary of D-day, the historic invasion of Normandy that helped turn the tide in World War II, and one year and a day since the Tribute was first dedicated.  The Beckemeyer American Legion Post 1227 Honor Guard was on hand to perform the Presentation of Colors, followed by the National Anthem performed by a choir under the direction of Kati Cox.  Welcoming remarks were given by Jim Beasley, Co-Chair of the Veterans Tribute Committee, and the man for whom the Tribute is named.  The Reverend Isaac Parker of the 2nd Baptist Church in Centralia and the Reverend Allan Mason, Interim Pastor of the Immanuel Church of Christ in Carlyle, were keynote speakers at the ceremony, each addressing the topic of “God, Country, and Patriotism,” while the choir performed “America,” America the Beautiful,” and the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Agnes White of the Veterans Tribute Committee recited “The Lord’s Prayer.”  Dr. Dee Boswell, Veterans Tribute Committee member and great benefactor of the Tribute took the podium for closing remarks an introduced an audience member, 90-year old Vince Rolves of Carlyle.  Rolves was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he was captured by the Germans and endured 18 months as a prisoner of war, including at the infamous Stalag 13.  The Beckemeyer Honor Guard reassembled for a Three Volley salute, followed by “Taps” to close out the ceremony.  The Veterans Tribute at Kaskaskia College is a unique, heartfelt monument that honors the men and women who have served, are currently serving, and those who will serve.  The Tribute allows students, family members, and visitors a connecting link to veterans by providing a broader spectrum, appreciation, and understanding of the magnitude of all that veterans have done in preserving democracy and in keeping the dream of freedom alive.
