Our sister station in Mount Vernon, WMIX, has been named 2015 Special Olympics Illinois Outstanding Media of the Year. WMIX Sports Director and Account Executive, Chris Hugo, will accept the award at a reception today before the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games Opening Ceremony at Illinois State University in Normal. The Outstanding Media Award recognizes an individual or organization that has helped communicate and/or promote Special Olympics Illinois and the achievements of its athletes, coaches and volunteers locally, area or statewide through news features and/or other presentations. WMIX has been a supporter of Special Olympics Illinois for 5 years. Withers Broadcasting and WMIX are multi-year media partners for the Rend Lake Polar Plunge providing on-air promotions. In addition, WMIX worked with Special Olympics in 2014-2015 at the Friday Night High School Pack-the-Place Event. Hugo has personally worked with Special Olympics Illinois for 3 years. He and sports broadcast partner Danny Czerwinski promote Special Olympics Illinois via social media retweeting scores, results and pictures of every Mount Vernon Township High School Special Olympics event. In the past year, Hugo and Mount Vernon Rams Football Coach Jared Shaner live broadcasted the Friday Night High School Pack-the-Place Event. Not only do they help with the promotion of Special Olympics Illinois, Hugo and WMIX-FM Afternoon Drive Host Dawson Koontz have also served as volunteers. At the Special Olympics fundraiser Slam Jam Contest, they have volunteered to serve as Emcees.
