The Irvington Grade School Board of Education met on Monday night and Superintendent Dave Schulte says they ended the school year with 56 students. He reported that the Board agreed to keep insuring themselves through the Prairie State Insurance Cooperative and the rates have gone down. They are still going through the Student – Parent Handbooks and will have them ready for approval at the next meeting. There will be a welcome back celebration on August 19th at 6 PM, which is also the first day of school. At the event, the parents will be able to meet with the teachers, have some fun and give aways. One of the big summer maintenance projects deals with the playground surface, as they are going to replace the safety cushion playground surface material from shredded tires, to a wood product. The rubber is getting old and the black is rubbing off onto students’ hands, clothes, shoes and they are also bringing the tire bits inside, which can be a nuisance. They are looking at putting a wood product called Kiddie Cushion, which is a certified and graded wood product, but not like wood chips. There is so many inches of it and it compacts under pressure. They plan to have this project done this summer. The Board also approved of Schulte’s contract for another 3 years. Registration for next year is on August 3rd from 2 to 7 PM and on August 4th from 10 AM to 2 PM. Schulte says they will also have school and sports physicals available at that time. The next meeting is on July 20th at 6:30 PM.
