Governor Pat Quinn announced an investment of nearly $4.4 million to replace a gymnasium and two classrooms in Chester School District 139 that have become unusable due to structural issues caused by shifting ground.  The school district will have to match that with $1,502,942.  The Chester Elementary School Gym and its connecting classrooms were condemned in July 2012 because shifting ground made them structurally unstable.  The condemnation has led to more than 600 Pre-K through 8th grade students having nowhere to have P.E. or recess during inclement weather for more than a year and a half.  The situation has also curtailed the community’s rich history of extracurricular events and other school activities.  The new buildings will be constructed on a more stable site nearby.  The state-funded project will also remediate water drainage issues so shifting ground does not become a concern again.
