The 67th Annual Okawville Fair and Wheat Festival begins tonight with the concession stands opening at 5 o’clock, the rides at the park will be from 6 to 11 PM, and J. Christopher, the Most Dangerous One Man Band will perform on the outdoor stage for free from 8 to midnight, but the really big event is the Queen and Junior Miss Pageant, which is at 7 o’clock at the Junior – Senior High School. Activities tomorrow include the food booths opening at 11 AM with a washer tournament, kiddie and antique tractor pulls, a local talent show, rides from 3 to 11 PM, music from the Venedy Band, as well as Hillbilly Authority and Bingo all night long. The booths are open again at 11 on Sunday with the rides from 2 to 9 PM. The big event is the parade a 2 o’clock with plenty of bands and floats. This year’s theme is “Vacation Destination.” There will be bingo again and music provided by the Okawville High School band and Backroads at night. Fair President Roy Frederking says a couple of things will be going on Saturday and Sunday, including the Exhibit Hall and the corn box for kids. The exhibits are limited to County residents and it will include school projects, quilting, canning, baking, flowers, a Junior Home Economic Department, an Ag Department, garden and various farm products. Last year they had approximately 1,700 entries in the big building with 2 rooms and it is almost full to capacity each year. They take entries until 8:30 tomorrow morning and these items are judged. Then the doors open at 2 PM and prizes of ribbons and money are awarded. Another big thing is the corn box for kids. It’s like a sandbox filled with corn instead and they have sandbox toys for the kids to use. Frederking says sometimes kids only see corn at this box once a year at the Fair. There is plenty of activities, entertainment and food all weekend long in Okawville at the Community Club Park with no charge to be in the park or for parking.
