The Nashville City Council met last night and the Police Committee reported back on 3 issues they discussed in their committee meeting earlier this month. One issue involves allowing golf carts onto some sidewalks. Golf carts are only allowed to be on city streets and none are currently allowed on state routes, such as Routes 15 and 127. A citizen requested special permission to drive on sidewalks, as she lives on Route 127 and there are no close city streets to her residence, therefore she either has to go on the highway, on the sidewalk or on someone’s property to get to a city street. Councilman Josh Fark reported that the committee agreed not to allow special permission for some residents at this time. It would prohibit walkers and bicyclists from using the sidewalk when a golf cart is on it and could be a safety issue, as well as could produce more problems in the future. No action was taken by the Council. The committee made a recommendation that the speed limit on Mockingbird Road from Route 127, west to the end of the city limits, be increased from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour. This was approved by the Council. An ordinance will be drafted on this topic. Another concern was presented to the Council last month that there is a concern about the traffic in the area of the Community Center with children being present in that area. Fark talks about their recommendation. The committee agreed not to take any action of changing the speed limits or adding more traffic signs, but did ask the police to increase patrols through that area. They also want to see if the amount of traffic decreases once the county offices move back into the Washington County Courthouse after the renovations are complete next year. At this time the Council asks residents driving in town to slow down, especially when children are present.
