A reported break-in at the Centralia Animal Shelter Friday night led to a high-speed chase through town and ended in a head-on collision around 10:30 PM that saw the drivers of the two vehicles airlifted to Saint Louis area hospitals for treatment of injuries. According to reports, Marion County Sheriff’s deputies attempted a traffic stop at Fifth and Pine Streets on a car driven by 38-year old Seth Lambert of Vernon. Lambert was suspected of breaking into the Centralia Animal Shelter and cutting the locks off the dog kennels. When deputies attempted to pull Lambert over, he reportedly sped off going east on Broadway. At Broadway and Perrine, Lambert’s vehicle pulled to the curb and a male passenger rolled out of the passenger door. That passenger has not yet been found. The chase resumed with speeds reaching 85 miles per hour before Lambert drove through the intersection of Noleman and Elm Streets, where a car driven by 19-year old Raigen Schwartz of Walnut Hill was stopped eastbound at a red light. Lambert struck the Schwartz vehicle head-on, pushing both vehicles west on Noleman Street. The Schwartz vehicle came to a stop against a curb on the right, while the Lambert vehicle continued until it struck a utility pole in front of the RollinUp Smoke Shop & Liquor store. Lambert, Schwartz and a 22-year old passenger in the Schwartz vehicle, Matt Baumgartner, of Centralia were all taken to SSM Health Saint Mary’s Hospital for treatment. Lambert was ultimately airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Schwartz was airlifted to Saint Louis University Hospital. She returned home Saturday with non-life threatening injuries and Baumgartner was treated and released at Saint Mary’s. The Illinois State Police is investigating the crash. Lambert remains hospitalized, but is facing charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding police, driving while license suspended, and on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a conviction for possession of methamphetamine.
