The Washington County Coroner presented his annual report last night at the Washington County Board meeting. Mark Styninger reported that his office received 114 calls and they responded to 46 of them. Last year they received 119 calls and they investigated 37 of them. There were 101 deaths due to natural causes in the county with 10 accidental deaths, which was down from 108 natural causes deaths, but up from 9 accidental deaths the previous year. There were 2 suicide deaths in 2015, up one from 2014. There was also 1 homicide, as there were none in the previous year. Styninger later elaborated on 5 of the 10 accidental deaths. 1 was alcohol related, but 4 were the direct result of someone texting while driving. He wants to seriously address this problem in Washington County, by getting together with the Sheriff and Police Chiefs from Nashville and Okawville, to get them to start enforcing this law more and issuing citations for people using cell phones while driving. He also is applying for a grant to use towards public education of the dangers of texting and driving. The Coroner performed 5 autopsies, as there were 4 overdose deaths, 3 attributed to heroin, the first he has encountered in the County. They cost $2,000 each and he only budgeted for 4, so he is looking at using toxicology tests more in 2016, as that only costs $200 each and there were 12 of those done in 2015. There were 3 autopsies and 13 toxicology tests were performed in 2014. There were 26 cremation permits issued, up 5 from the previous year.
