The West Washington County Community Unit School District #10 Board of Education met last week and Superintendent Scott Fuhrhop reports they approved to move $1 million from a Building Project Fund into the Bond Fund to be used to pay off $2.1 million in bonds early.  This was money that was still left in the building fund, as well as because the Enterprise Zone was extended.  This allows them to also pay off the 2013 series bonds, which will save the district $138,000.  They also had a resolution to abate a portion of the taxes levied for the year 2015 to pay debt service on other school bonds in the amount of $1.65 million.  In other news, they had a first reading of a school calendar and it is set for school to begin on August 15th with teachers’ in-service and students begin the following day.  The last day of school would be May 16, 2017, but that is contingent on how many emergency days are used next school year.  The Student Council field trip was approved and the Board approved of bid letting for the grass mowing services for the 2016 season.  Principal Keith Senior talked about a summer engineering camp for grade schoolers with more details to be coming in the future.  In personnel moves, the Board approved of hiring Steven Schubert as the high school junior varsity volleyball coach and Kate Mays as the high school junior varsity softball coach.  Fuhrhop mentioned that the Athletic Academic Awards were announced and for Okawville High School, the volleyball team and both boys’ and girls’ golf teams earned that award for team grade point averages of 3.0 or higher.  He reported the cross country teams did not earn the awards due to not enough members on the team to qualify.  The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 23rd at 8 PM.
