A private foundation is being pushed by Governor Bruce Rauner, which is ready to kick off a major fundraising effort to revamp Illinois fairgrounds that have become to deteriorate. Rauner announced the start of the Illinois Fairgrounds Foundation last year at the state fair, with a goal to raise enough money to repair buildings that are starting to crumble down. He also wants to fix deteriorating roadways and aging sewer and electrical systems. Fairgrounds have also had to battle flooding whenever heavy rain occurs. The foundation is seeking $185-million in private money and donations to help pay for the project. The group has already raised $5,000 to $10,000 so far, according to the foundation chairman John Slayton. He continued to state that the foundation is hoping to see more donations through their website. With the website being live, they foresee higher donor rates. There is also talks of selling the naming rights to the revamped buildings to raise funds.
