Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner announces that he has summoned lawmakers into a special session to settle the public education funding issues, just weeks before schools are anticipated to begin. Rauner ordered the House of Representatives and the Senate to report to Springfield on Wednesday for a special session. This is after the Senate missed the deadline Rauner gave them on Monday, in regard to the school-finance plan legislators approved in May. Rauner has pledged to issue his amendatory veto to the measure. He suggested that he wants to remove a portion of the bill, which would require the state to pay the employer portion of Chicago Public Schools’ teacher pension costs. Democratic Senate president from Chicago John Cullerton has stated that he wants to discuss the matter with Rauner personally, instead of costing the state money to open a special session. The bill, which has numerous support from area superintendents, is called SB1.
