A man from Opdyke is sentenced to 120 years in jail, after he filed for an open plea of guilt in September in Jefferson County, in regard to 3 of 11 child sex offenses against him. 29-year-old Garrett McElveen was sentenced on Friday to 40-years in jail in each of his Class X felony counts of predatory criminal sexual assault to a victim under 13-years-old. All 3 counts will be served consecutively. If he is released from jail, McElveen will also have mandatory supervision, which will last between 3-years to life. The judge handed down the sentencing on Friday, after the victim’s grandmother read the victim impact statement in court. McElveen was officially indicted in January of 2016, to 11 Class X felony counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and a Class 4 felony for sexual exploitation of a child. He has been held at the Jefferson County Jail since his December 2015 arrest, after he was interviewed by sheriff’s deputies and the Mt. Vernon Police Department detectives, in regard to a call on Liberty Road in Mt. Vernon. Following the interview, McElveen was arrested and charged with the alleged predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug equipment and possession of a hypodermic needle.
