Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan says that he is currently taking steps to end harassment and abuse at the statehouse and in his political operation. This is after a former staff member stated that the party are being too slow to act. In a letter to Democratic caucus members on Friday, Madigan says, “We have not done enough and I will take responsibility for that.” Madigan is the leader of the Democratic party in Illinois dismissed a long-time political consultant on Monday, after an investigation found that the consultant repeatedly sent inappropriate text messages to staffer Alaina Hampton. Hampton says that she reported the sexual harassment last year. Madigan dismissed him a day after the report of Hampton’s harassment became public. Madigan said on Friday that he is providing staff with names and contact information to report any incidents or allegations. He also retained an independent firm to investigate the harassment allegations.
