One out of every 5 Illinois legislators will be taking the oath of office next winter, will be new to the General Assembly. 30 lawmakers, many who are tired of skirmishes between Governor Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan over state finances, have decided to retire or just do not wish re-election in November. That is also along with the anti-sexual harassment movement, which has been sweeping a Democratic state senator and in recent weeks. There have also been issues to immigration and abortion laws, which Rauner has been supporting. Legislators are also fed up with the waste of hundreds of billions of dollars that the state has in debt. The primary election this year is on March 20th, where voters has voiced that they are seeking change within parties. Madigan is the longest-serving state House speaker in the history of the United States. His tenure has also come into question, even among Democrats, as allegations are coming out of how he has mishandled complaints to sexual harassment by political campaign employees.
