A Centralia home was heavily damaged on Tuesday afternoon, after a fire broke out, which officials are calling suspicious. Centralia firefighters responded to the home on the 500 block of South Maple Street on Tuesday, at around 130pm, after a neighbor called 911. The neighbor said that flames were visible through a bedroom window. Once firefighters arrived, smoke was reportedly coming from the house, with all off-duty firefighters called in to assist. Reports say that the resident, Justin Heern, had left the residence earlier and left the front door open. The fire reportedly started in one of the bedrooms, but once 1st responders arrived, it was fully engulfed in flames, with flames coming from 2 windows and from the open front door. While firefighters were able to keep the fire confined to the bedroom only, the rest of the home suffered heavy smoke damage. They were also able to keep the fire from spreading to the neighboring homes. Ameren was also called to the scene to jump the electricity, so that it could still be used. The State Fire Marshals Office was called as well to investigate the cause of the fire.
