A new defense attorney in the case against a man convicted for the 2014 death of a Southern Illinois University students, has won a delay in his sentencing, while he attempts to have the conviction thrown out. A judge pushed back the sentencing on Monday, for 24-year-old Gaege Bethune of Eldorado, until September 17th. He had originally been scheduled for his sentencing for Wednesday, after a jury convicted him this last June of 1st-degree murder on 19-year-old Pravin Varughese. Defense attorney Steven Greenberg of Chicago replaced Bethune’s previous lawyer last week. Prosecutors maintained their argument that the two intoxicated men fought each other while driving around Carbondale and looked for cocaine back in February 2014. Bethune is accused of causing head injuries to Varughese, causing him to be disoriented and eventually leading to his hypothermia death. Greenberg argues that there is no evidence that was presented to prove that claim.
