Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has vetoed a legislation, that would permit experts to study the impact of supplemental feeding of wild deer. The Republican Governor rejected the proposal on Tuesday, which was brought up by a senator to allow the University of Illinois Prairie Research Institute to conduct the study. Hunters advocate in supplemental feeding, in order to ensure that deer herds have proper nutrition during summer antler-growing season and in winter, when natural food sources are scarce. The study would have determined the health effects of supplemental feeding on deer herds, and whether or not it would spread communicable diseases. It would have helped determine the locations that would have the most benefit to those herds. Rauner is a hunter, but he says that the study’s scope should be better defined and be clearer on the involvement of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
