Employees of a state-run veterans home say that they are being forced to work excessive overtime, as Illinois officials are leaving 40 positions vacant. About 3-dozen employees were chanting and picketing outside the Quincy veterans’ home in western Illinois. Local union president Nettie Smith says that employees have worked about 1,600 overtime hours during the month of August, as managers are not filling licensed practical nurse and nursing assistant jobs. Employees say that they are being worn down, by sometimes working 16-hour days. The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs is blaming the overtime on employee absences and says that overtime hours are down from last year. The state attorney general’s office is investigating on how Governor Bruce Rauner and his administration handled the Legionnaire’s disease outbreak at the home, which was linked to 14 deaths during the last 3 years.
