A special prosecutor has dropped charges against a man in southern Illinois, who was convicted in the death of a Southern Illinois University student, who had his case overturned on an appeal. Prosecutors say that they plan to rebuild a case against Gaege Bethune, in the 2014 death of 19-year-old Previn Varughese. A Jackson Circuit Court judge ruled in September that Bethune’s 1st degree murder conviction was dismissed, saying that jurors could have been confused by wording in the man’s indictment. A special prosecutor stated that the state will begin once again to reinvestigate the murder case against Bethune. Prosecutors say that Bethune and Varughese were intoxicated and were driving around Carbondale looking for cocaine. The two eventually got into a fight allegedly and Bethune caused head injuries to Varughese, which left the 19-year-old disoriented. Bethune then allegedly left his body outside in a wooded area outside of Carbondale, leading to his hypothermia death. IN winning the appeal, Bethune’s attorney argued that no evidence was presented at the trial to prove the prosecution’s case.
