The Illinois Senate has approved a bill, that would require all 5-year-olds to attend Kindergarten. Senate Bill 20-75 would mandate all Illinois parents to enroll their 5-year-old children into Kindergarten, starting in the 2020-21 school year. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 39-16. Area senators Jason Plummer and Paul Shimpf voted no on the measure. Currently, parents must start their children in school at age 6, and keep them there until age 17. Parents do have the option to send off their children as young as 4 to Kindergarten. Mandatory school attendance begins when children reach the compulsory age on or before September 1st of each year. This bill would push that date up to May 31st each school year. The bill is currently inside the Illinois House Rules Committee.
