The Nashville Grade School Board of Education met last night and Superintendent Mike Brink said the Board heard from Strategic Planning Team #5 about Student Growth and Achievement.  The group presented the Board with some additional clubs to get the students involved in with hopes that the more involved a student is in school, it will translate to better performance in the classroom.  The 5 clubs are Gardening, Art, Fitness, Lego and Baking – Cooking.  Gardening and Art would be for students in kindergarten through 4th grade.  Lego would be for kindergarten through 5th grade, while Fitness and Baking – Cooking would be for 5th through 8th graders.  They would be afterschool, evening or weekend programs on the school grounds with certified staff members, but volunteers would be welcome if needed.  The group knows that some equipment will be needed for these groups, but they feel they could get donations of equipment and – or funds, plus look at grants or other funding.  They also recommended that staff be paid a stipend.  This was only for informational purposes last night and the Board will vote on it in the future.  Currently there are sports and academic clubs.  Brink said the school was approached by a neighbor, whose backyard is against the Middle School parking lot, who wants to purchase some of the land to expand his lot and put up a fence for his dogs.  This was only for discussion last night.  Brink updated the Board on the 1 to 1 computer program and basic training will be next month with main training during the summer.  The Board approved all certified employees for next school year.  Some employees will be without a job at the end of the school year, temporarily says Brink.  That includes those who job relies on enrollment or grants.  Because the numbers or funds are not available until the summer, they are not hired back, but he says they anticipate most or all will be hired back.  This is a yearly occurrence.  Brink also said they are making the physical education instructor a part time position.  This will affect grades kindergarten through 4th grade.  The Board hired Cullen Ibendahl as a full-time custodian.  He will begin next month.  Graduation has been set for May 23rd at 7 PM at the school for the 8th grade class, which is large at nearly 63 students.
