The defending NL champion Saint Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds open the season against each other today for only the second time in the last 20 years. The Cardinals won the season series 11-8 last year and held off the Reds, who had to settle for a wild card. The Cardinals are stocked for another title run. Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in the NL Cy Young voting last season, faces Cincinnati’s Johnny Cueto.
In boy’s high school baseball the Nashville Hornets played 2 games on Saturday. They beat Metro East Lutheran 11 to 1 in 5 innings, but then lost 4 to 3 to Freeburg. The Hornets are scheduled to play every afternoon this week and they take on New Athens today at 4:30. The game is on the V and v1047.com.
