
Wilma K. Harpole, 92, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, surrounded by the most wonderful medical staff and compassionate care.
Wilma was born on July 30, 1933, to Elgin and Alice (Culli) Harpole. A lifelong resident of Mt. Vernon, she graduated as Valedictorian of Mt. Vernon High School and carried her dedication, intelligence, and strong work ethic throughout her life and career.
She worked for Standard Reliance Insurance, later owned and operated Secretarial and Office Services, and retired from Royal Neighbors of America. Wilma also faithfully served the Mt. Vernon community as Director of Downtown Development.
An active civic leader, Wilma was a member and state president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and was active in the Republican Women’s Party. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church and served as past president of the Bethel Cemetery Board. She also served for 23 years on the Board of Commissioners Housing Authority for the City of Mount Vernon.
Wilma especially loved traveling and cherished the many experiences and friendships made throughout her life. She loved her family dearly.
She is survived by her brother, Jerry (Joyce) Harpole; nephew, Jeff (Michele) Harpole; niece, Nikki (Kevin) Rutz; great-nieces, Faith (Logan) Payne and Haleigh (Harrison) Walker; great-nephew, Logan Rutz; and great-great-nephews, Wesley, Owen, and Camden Payne.
A graveside service will be held at Bethel Cemetery on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., with Howard Kraps officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethel Cemetery through the Hughey Funeral Home.
Wilma will be remembered for her intelligence, dedication to her community, faithful service, and kind spirit.
