The annual meeting of the City of Nashville Gas Emergency Plan was held a week ago tonight. City Utility Supervisor Blaine Middleton talked about calling for guidance before digging on property, which means calling JULIE, which stands for Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators. He says it is the law and the city is happy to come out and assist you when digging around their pipes, as it helps keep everyone safe. That number is 8-1-1. This is for any digging project, no matter how shallow or deep. There are several different colored flags that might be found in a yard or colored spray paint on pavement and they all mean something important, says Middleton. Yellow represents gas, blue is for water, green is sewer, purple is for raw water and white is proposed digging area. Also, red is electric, orange is phone, cable or other communication lines and pink is a temporary survey. This is not always the case for each color, but it is important to check what is on the flags. Middleton added that callers should be precise and detailed on their plans and what is in that area of the project.
