The Illinois State Police is asking motorists to buckle up and drive sober over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, and as stated in the previous story, injuries of all kinds can occur when not buckling up.  Troopers are joining the Illinois Department of Transportation and local law enforcement agencies in an effort to save lives by aggressively enforcing seat belt and impaired driving laws.  According to IDOT, the daytime seat belt usage rate is 93.7 percent.  However, far too many drivers and passengers still do not buckle up, especially during nighttime hours.  In Illinois, during the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday, 9 vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes, 3 of which involved a drinking driver.  In addition, 700 individuals were injured during the same time period.  Research continually shows that wearing a seatbelt increases your chances of surviving a motor vehicle crash.  The “Click It or Ticket” Campaign began yesterday and ends on December 1st.
