Governor Pat Quinn visited all the areas of the state hit by Sunday’s tornadoes yesterday. He arrived in New Minden shortly before 8 PM and addressed the situation, which was much the same in various parts, especially in Brookport, which also had loss of life. There were 2 deaths as a result of the F4 tornado in New Minden, that being Joseph and Frances Hoy. Quinn said the various agencies of the state are going to be working with the mayor and people of New Minden to get things taken care of. Washington County has been declared a disaster county and then there will be assessments and finally it will be presented to the federal government. Mayor Candi Cross praised the volunteerism of the past couple of days as did Quinn also praised the volunteers. Local, county and state agencies will remain on scene as the cleanup continues. Congressman John Shimkus visited the New Minden area yesterday afternoon to survey the situation, after being in the far southern part of Illinois, surveying the damage from the tornado in Brookport, which claimed the lives of 4 individuals. He visited the location where the bulk of the damage was at the Saint John’s Lutheran Church and the homes across the street. Shimkus talked about the townspeople getting together as well.
