The Nashville Community High School Board of Education met last night at the High School’s Conference Room. Under the Principal’s Report, there were a few announcements made to the board. It was reported that around 4 students have missed per day since the new year started with up, due to the flu. Administration has advised that staff and students bring in their own water bottles, to avoid spreading the disease. It was also announced that the 8th Grade Orientation for incoming Freshman students went extremely well. Also the NIT went according to plans with no issues. Under new business, there was 7 items to address. The board approved the Agriculture 3 Circles Grant and the Major Clarity Grant last night. The Agriculture 3 Circles Grant allows a teacher to be paid for the extra work that they put in for up to 400 hours of work. The Major Clarity Grant is a 3-year grant worth $500 and allows the school to purchase software that can help students determine what career path they should choose. The Board will also not spend any additional money beside the $500 that is given from the grant, so no money will be spend out-of-pocket. Two out-of-state field trips were approved, which are both for a tour of the St. Louis Holocaust Museum. The English 4 World Literature Class will go on February 7th, while the English 4 Honors Class will go on February 21st. There were also some fee changes approved last night at the meeting. The English 4 World Literature Class will have their fee go down from $11 to $8. An English 1 Class changes their fee from $8 to $18. The Anatomy and Physiology or A and P Class moves from $16 to $20. Also approved were two new courses at the high school. The 1st one will allow athletes and other students to replace their PE class. This alternative will be called Athletic P.E., or a Strength and Flexibility Class. This class will give students an opportunity to focus the semester on specific training for a sport of their choosing or almost like a weight lifting class. The Fee will be $20 for the student. Also approved as a new class called the workplace communication. This class, which was presented at one of the teacher’s BEST meetings, will replace one of the British Literature Classes and allow students to prepare themselves for workplace etiquette and ethics. Since some students do not want to pursue a 4-year degree at a university and only want 2-years of college at a technical school, this class is directed towards those students. They will also learn about the application and interview process, writing a resume, writing a complaint letter, worker co-operation and different social skills at a workplace. This will be available in the 2018-19 school year. There were also 28 board policies that were approved at the meeting. Under the superintendent’s report, there were a few updates. Presented to the board last night was the protocol of school closings, since the district called off classes a few times already this year. That includes how to predict potential ice and the whole process of how school gets cancelled. An update was also given on the cafeteria area, where old items are going to be disposed of, either by selling them to the public or throwing them away. Also the building and grounds update will be presented at next months meeting. The board went into closed session at 657pm. After an hour of meeting, they re-opened at 807 and had no information to release. The next board meeting for Nashville Community High School District 99 will be Monday, February 26th.
