An Illinois House committee has approved a bill, which will prevent credit card companies from marketing their products on public university and community college campuses. Despite passing the legislation, some committee members from both parties are questioning whether the bill was necessary. Democratic Representative Carol Ammons of Urbana says that the acts the state currently has are ineffective on these numbers. Democratic Representative Sue Scherer of Decatur, who is the bill chief co-sponsor, says that legislation would help reduce predatory behavior that leads to students signing up for credit cards that will alter turn into crippling debt. Scherer says that the bill still needs work, but she promises to fix any drafting errors. The bill would also repeal the Illinois Credit Card Marketing Act of 2009. Lobbyists from the banking industry oppose the bill, arguing that it is an ineffective approach. The instead would support increased student education on financial topics. The University of Illinois System and the Illinois Community College Board are taking no position on the legislation.
