An August jury trial date has been confirmed in the Jefferson County court, which charges a 19-year-old Mt. Vernon man with 1st-degree murder. Roderick Oats Jr. is facing charges of shooting Carlos Johnson to death back in July of 2017. Officers responded to the 700 block of South 25th Street on July 9th, 2017, in regard to a report of multiple shots being fired. Officials were later contacted by an area hospital, after a man was brought in to the emergency room with gunshot wounds. The Jefferson County Coroner then declared 20-year-old Carlos Johnson dead from the wound he suffered. Oats was then arrested shortly after that the same night in Benton, where he was charged with 3 counts of 1st-degree murder for the death and had bail set at $3-million. At the time of his arrest, Oats was free on a $2,500 cash bond, after being arrested in Marion County for alleged possession of a stolen firearm and carrying or possessing a firearm without a proper FOID card. He was a passenger in a car that was stopped by officers, while they were leaving a party in Salem where 2 people were shot. He was not a suspect in that shooting incident at the time, but he was found to be in possession of a 38 caliber handgun, which reportedly had 4 bullets inside and the hammer cocked. The gun was reported stolen back in 1982 from Hanover, Massachusetts.
