A Centralia man was taken into custody early on Tuesday morning, after shot were allegedly fired at police from Centralia and Wamac, who pursued the suspect in a reported shooting in DuQuoin. According to Centralia Police, at around 130am on Tuesday, Centralia and Wamac police spotted 41-year-old Nathan Johnson in a vehicle, that reportedly was involved in a shooting and vehicle pursuit in DuQuoin. Police Chief Brian Atchison says that the vehicle was traveling northbound on Route 51, north of Irvington, at a high rate of speed, before turning onto Walnut Hill Road in Washington County. Johnson then turned into his driveway on Irvington Road and stopped. He then reportedly fired at officers from a considerable distance, striking one of the police squad cars. Officers and deputies from Washington, Jefferson, Clinton and Marion counties, along with Central City and Illinois State Police Officers all assisted at the scene. Police initiated phone contact with the suspect, and after lengthy conversations, he surrendered at around 430am to police. No shots were fired by police in this incident and no one was injured. Due to the case involving multiple jurisdictions and counties, this case will be handled by the Illinois State Police Department. Johnson was charged on Tuesday afternoon by the Washington County court with a Class X felony for aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer or a firefighter.
